About Member

Mission:
To strengthening psychological support to patients and families living with cancer and to network with other NGOs serving patients with cancer.

PLWC is a non-profit organisation.

A large component of the support programme revolves around the use of ?buddies? who are volunteers and who have previously been diagnosed with cancer. By using their experience of successfully coping the disease, they are trained to assist and counsel current patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. PWLC trains volunteers to carry out a supportive role and to function as a "Buddy.

Objectives:

  • To develop a national infrastructure providing psycho emotional support to all South Africans who have been diagnosed with and who are living with cancer.
  • To assist clients and their families deal with the following:
    • Diagnosis;
    • Treatment;
    • Emotional issues;
    • Legal, social and financial issues;
    • Living with, and beyond the treatment of cancer.
  • Training of volunteers for the efficient running of disease specific support groups.
  • Support cancer survivors and their next-of-kin to cope by improving their life skills.
  • To form a community-based organisation catering to the specific needs of the entire spectrum of South African society.
  • To work towards greater coordination between organisations that serve all people living with various cancers to prevent the duplication of, and to encourage the sharing of, resources thus ensuring more effective management on a national level
