Dramatic breakthrough on open disclosure in England.

A breakthrough in patient rights in the UK is the statutory duty of candour. This rule will legally oblige every registered healthcare provider in England to ensure that there is full and honest disclosure about incidents which cause serious harm. This UK government has brought this into being with much resistance from certain sectors after the abuse scandal at Stafford Hospital where 1,200 deaths between 2005 and 2008. The inquiry report published in 2013 recommended that there was a fundamental change in the NHS culture where patients are put first.

Perhaps South Africa will take some notes from this inquiry.

SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands 2013 – Patient participation!

The May 5th  Clean Your Hands campaign was a great success with an increased number of hospital registrations and WHO Member States  pledging to combat healthcare associated infections (HAI). PFPS collaborated extensively to encourage greater patient participation for hand washing leading up to the campaign. This year’s campaign called for healthcare facilities to work with their patients, patient organizations and local communities to promote hand hygiene in the prevention of HAI.
